25th Anniversary of XP

In 2024 we will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the first XP Software Conference held in Cagliari on the island of Sardinia in Italy.

XP2024 will feature a special “Anniversary Track” dedicated to celebrating and providing a retrospective of past XP Conferences, as well as looking forward to the next 25 years.

Workshop: Innovating Software Solutions: Past, Present, Future

Steven Fraser and Werner Wild

Change and new ways of working, will be driven by a diverse and global community of users, developers, and academics. To deliver innovations and value, software professionals continuously evolve their approaches. Yesterday’s research and experimentation leads to a new normal today – which drives a need for professionals to refresh their skills and experience base. What have we learned over the past 25 years – and where will the future lead the software research and practitioner communities? Will AI or other emergent technologies be a nemesis or nirvana? Walk-in attendees are welcome. Interested attendees may submit an optional one-page position paper (to sdfraser at acm dot org). Position papers might explain personal experiences (positive or negative) with software production from either a practitioner or researcher perspective.

Workshop: Reimagining Agile

Teresa Foster and Heidi Musser

Is it time to Reimagine Agile, to make it accessible to everyone, refreshing what needs to endure and extending Agile to Agility and new horizons?

The workshop will be a discussion of:

  • Brief history of the Agile Manifesto
  • What were the problems we were trying to solve?
  • What has changed since the Manifesto was created?

Recent years have certainly tested the courage of most organizations, as the world has moved from a business environment of low inflation and relative calm to one roiled by the COVID-19 pandemic, generationally high inflation, deepening geopolitical tensions, accelerating climate events, and the rise of generative AI.

All while the rate of technological change has accelerated – and continues to accelerate rapidly! Including, how technology solutions are designed and delivered:

  • The people involved in the design and delivery of technology solutions.
  • The digitization of business.
  • The technology stack.
  • The tools we use to develop technology solutions.

Anniversary Track Call for Participation

Proposals are sought for anniversary “events,” including interactive workshops, panel sessions, and games. Events should feature, celebrate, or review the successes and/or shortcomings of past XP Conferences and propose roadmaps for future XP Conferences. Event proposals should be 1 to 4 pages (in any format), and they will be evaluated based on:
  • Relevance to the 25th Anniversary of the XP Conference Series.
  • Anticipated engagement of XP2024 participants to foster learning and networking.
  • Content “leverage” of past XP Conferences to promote future innovation.

Proposed events should:

  • Fit within a 30-, 60- or 90-minute program block.
  • Identify prospective participants (panelists, facilitators, etc.), anticipated audience, and event format, e.g., fireside chats, debates, quizzes, show trials, games, etc.
  • Be sponsored by at least two and preferably three individuals from different organizations.

Anniversary Track Papers and Essays

Papers and essays relevant to the 25th-anniversary celebrations will also be considered. Papers might assess the impact of Agile over the past 25 years, review content from previous XP Conferences, or anticipate the future evolution of Agile.

An anniversary essay may be an exploration of an agile-related topic and its impact, it may present a personal view of agile concepts, it may be a philosophical digression, or it may be a deep analysis. Alternatively, an essay may describe a personal journey that an author took to reach an understanding of the topic.

Papers and essays should be in Springer format and not exceed 8 pages. Find formatting details here.

To be considered, proposals must be submitted electronically via EasyChair.
