Onsite Research Track

Onsite Research Track offers a rare opportunity for researchers to conduct empirical studies on-site and collect high-quality empirical data. We have accepted to this track four submissions of interesting research. We encourage all XP participants to participate in these studies! That way you help researchers to collected data and provide us all interesting research results in the future.

Sven Theobald and Pascal Guckenbiehl:  How Do Teams Manage Impediments?

Many agile teams use impediment management to identify, document and solve blockers that prevent them from working efficiently and achieving their sprint goals. There is few guidance concerning impediment management, only that you have to collect impediments and specify them in the impediments backlog. Many teams developed individual solutions to approach impediments. We plan to provide an overview over the way teams handle their impediments with the help of an online survey. Filling out the survey takes approximately 15 to 30 minutes (27 questions). You help the whole agile community to understand and improve the management of impediments. In addition, the questionnaire also helps you to reflect on your own impediments management process.

Bruno Piedade, David Reis, João Pedro Dias, Filipe Correia and Ademar Aguiar: Container and Orchestration Specifications: A Survey on Current Practices and Challenges

Cloud computing has reshaped the way that practitioners develop and deploy software. Infrastructure can now easily be specified as code, and Docker, and other container technologies, play a fundamental role in this. However, this new kind of software development is still widely unstudied. The first studies suggest that there may be recurrent issues when creating, reading and debugging Dockefiles and docker-compose files. What we want to understand is what these issues really are in the software industry at large, and what approaches are being used to mitigate them.
We want to employ the results of this study to provide new approaches, and tools, to help developers work with container technologies. Your help is invaluable for this! If you used software containers before, we want to know what issues have bugged you the most, and how you’ve worked around them. To participate, you will just need to answer this short questionnaire, and we would be happy to share our findings with you after the study —

Simone Romano, Giuseppe Scanniello, Maria Teresa Baldassarre, Davide Fucci and Danilo Caivano: Experts’ Opinions on the Affective Reactions to Test-Driven Development

Test-driven Development (TDD) is an approach to software development, which is claimed to increase both developers’ productivity and software quality. In this respect, the results on the claimed effects of TDD are, so far, inconclusive. A possible reason is the negative affective states that developers would experience when initially exposed to TDD—e.g., frustration due to spending time writing unit tests that fail, rather than immediately focusing on writing production code.
We are conducting a survey on the affective states that TDD would provoke when it is applied to develop software. Have you ever used TDD? Are you a TDD practitioner, a TDD lecturer, or a researcher studying TDD effects? Please, share your thoughts by filling in our survey: https://tinyurl.com/tdd-survey

Sulabh Tyagi and Atulya Krishna: A Roadmap to Effective Enterprise Agile Transformation : An Empirical Investigation

Background: Growing interest and trend towards scaling agile at the organizational level by more than 40% of the respondents as reported in largest reoccurring survey on agile by version one To provide empirical insights and scientific foundation , international workshop on “Large Scale Agile” has been conducted every year in XP International conference since 2019.

Research Objective: To explore the road map towards the effective enterprise agile transformation To fulfill the gap in available body of research on different steps and stages of enterprise agile transformation To enlighten how to integrate agile delivery with non IT functions like PMO, HR, Marketing, compliance and governance Why to participate in this study: A preliminary findings and our research publication will be shared with all the participants upon completion of this research study.

To foster learning and support budding researchers like us with your real world knowledge To gain latest information on trends and insights on enterprise and large scale agile transformation across the world by participating in our online surveys and short interviews.
