Onsite Research Track offers a rare opportunity for researchers to conduct empirical studies on-site and collect high-quality empirical data. We have accepted to this track four submissions of interesting research. We encourage all XP participants to participate in these studies! That way you help researchers to collected data and provide us all interesting research results in the future.

Sven Theobald and Pascal Guckenbiehl:  How Do Teams Manage Impediments?

Many agile teams use impediment management to identify, document and solve blockers that prevent them from working efficiently and achieving their sprint goals. There is few guidance concerning impediment management, only that you have to collect impediments and specify them in the impediments backlog. Many teams developed individual solutions to approach impediments. We plan to provide an overview over the way teams handle their impediments with the help of an online survey. Filling out the survey takes approximately 15 to 30 minutes (27 questions). You help the whole agile community to understand and improve the management of impediments. In addition, the questionnaire also helps you to reflect on your own impediments management process.

Bruno Piedade, David Reis, João Pedro Dias, Filipe Correia and Ademar Aguiar: Container and Orchestration Specifications: A Survey on Current Practices and Challenges

Cloud computing has reshaped the way that practitioners develop and deploy software. Infrastructure can now easily be specified as code, and Docker, and other container technologies, play a fundamental role in this. However, this new kind of software development is still widely unstudied. The first studies suggest that there may be recurrent issues when creating, reading and debugging Dockefiles and docker-compose files. What we want to understand is what these issues really are in the software industry at large, and what approaches are being used to mitigate them.
We want to employ the results of this study to provide new approaches, and tools, to help developers work with container technologies. Your help is invaluable for this! If you used software containers before, we want to know what issues have bugged you the most, and how you’ve worked around them. Simone Romano, Giuseppe Scanniello, Maria Teresa Baldassarre, Davide Fucci and Danilo Caivano: Experts’ Opinions on the Affective Reactions to Test-Driven Development

Test-driven Development (TDD) is an approach to software development, which is claimed to increase both developers’ productivity and software quality. In this respect, the results on the claimed effects of TDD are, so far, inconclusive. A possible reason is the negative affective states that developers would experience when initially exposed to TDD—e.g., frustration due to spending time writing unit tests that fail, rather than immediately focusing on writing production code.
