Abstract/Description

If the last two years have shown us anything, it’s that things around us can change almost overnight. Our routines can be disrupted, how we perform our jobs, even how we get our food can be turned upside down. These and other factors begin to chip away at our schedule, and it can feel that the entire world needs something from us – some attention, some work, some time. In these times of stress, crisis, and change, it can be difficult to make the space for yourself to grow and develop from a standpoint of learning. This learning could be a more deliberate activity of your choosing, or situational experience-based development. Making space in our lives for this is a challenge we all face, often going at it alone while just trying to make it through the day. This session faces this situation head on, acknowledging that times are different and that the catalysts that we face are real, with real impacts to our work, our families, our schedule, and our lives. We will explore different catalysts and examples of what brings about this “noise” before focusing on what learning needs will help us navigate, maintain, or improve our situation. By attending this session, participants will learn about different types of catalysts, the needs that come from them, and contrast two different types of learning. By understanding the situation at hand, analyzing what knowledge would serve you well, and making the space for this learning, you can take the first step towards your own needs.

Leading From Within, and From Without
Most of the places I've worked doing software development have been less than ideal. There is almost always a lot of room for improvement. While this might be typical, I didn't like it. I want to work in a field where things are better than this. But…
