Bridging the Agile-PMI Gap

Friends,

Some of you have read about the effort to form a PMI SIG for Agile/Lean practices (see http://www.agilealliance.com/show/1982), and I wanted to give you a quick update.

Over the last couple years, PMI has been overhauling the way all their communities (SIGs, Colleges, Chapters) are chartered and run. During this time PMI has placed a moratorium on the creation of any new SIGs, until a new community governance model has been developed (Phase 1), piloted (Phase 2), and rolled out (Phase 3).

2007 saw the completion of Phase 1, the development of a new governance framework. It addresses issues like community incorporation, budgeting, membership, etc. During the first half of 2008, a subset of existing SIGs & Chapters have been asked to pilot the new framework for Phase 2. Therefore, PMI won’t begin selecting subject areas for new “virtual communities” (the new official term for SIGs) until the second half of 2008 at the earliest.

So, that gives us nearly 6 months of time to build more grassroots support. Already there is considerable momentum in bridging the gap between the PMI and Agile communities, thanks to Agile PMPs everywhere. PMI knows about our desire as PMPs to broaden the horizon of Project Management best practices. But there is so much more ground that needs to be covered. We need to grow this momentum by reaching out to our colleagues and coworkers. Recruit Lean-minded PMI members from non-IT fields like manufacturing and business process analysis. Tell every Agile PMI member you know to email PMI at communityformation@pmi.org and convey their interest in a PMI Agile community.

We can bridge the gap, and in the process, improve how management is done in every-day projects across the world.

If you have any questions about the finer details of PMI’s Virtual Communities Project, send an email to communityformation@pmi.org.
