J. B. Rainsberger's position statement
J. B. Rainsberger, Canada, Consultant, URLs: www.jbrains.ca, www.diasparsoftware.com
In 2004 at XP/Agile Universe Calgary I proposed an Open Space session asking how XP service providers could collaborate more: on content, in the classroom, at the client site. Since then I have seen more collaboration pop up, but I’d like to see it become more common, so I am interested in ways the Agile Alliance can facilitate this. Also, it’s high time we focus in earnest on literature and support for the customer. In particular, I’d like to help the Agile Alliance encourage practicing Customers (in all shapes and sizes) to contribute more to the literature. Finally, I would like to contribute something to the question of agile certification, to help find a mechanism that helps safeguard the agile concept from those who would dilute or deform it without resorting to the kind of rubber-stamp certification that exist in the larger software community and indeed industry on the whole.
Why should you pay attention to me? I’ve contributed to the agile community since 2000, beginning with answering questions in the JUnit and XP mailing lists, now currently as a practitioner, coach of teams and coach of coaches. My interests have expanded from TDD to include all aspects of the team, including teamwork and how to give good advice. I have been a programmer on several agile projects and a coach for several agile teams, but have yet to act as a customer on an agile project, something I hope to do in 2008. I have attended XP Universe-XP/Agile Universe-Agile 200x since its inception and have presented at the North American conference since 2003 and the European conference since 2006. In 2005 I launched XP Day North America both to give the XP-curious a low-risk way to learn and to give rising stars in the community another opportunity to be seen and heard in their local community.
